EXCESSIVE DAYTIME SLEEPINESS

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) may be caused by many things. All people are sleepy at one time or another – this is a normal aspect of our lives. However, when we have a tendency to sleep at times when we need to be awake (at school, at work, driving), it is problematic and needs attention.

Patients who are excessively sleepy may be simply suffering from inadequate time spent asleep. Other individuals may have Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Narcolepsy, side effects from a medicine, Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, or other problems. Adolescents who are sleepy in school may have a Disorder of Body Rhythms.

Consultation with a sleep specialist may be helpful – this may lead to a correct diagnosis and proper treatment.
